Bottom Line: Don’t Drink from a Garden Hose

A couple weeks ago, my husband and I went to our favorite Indian Buffet for lunch. When we entered the restaurant, the familiar server showed us to our usual table which was already set with two glasses of water and lime slices. That’s what we always drink there. She said she’d seen us pull into the parking lot and went ahead and got our drinks and brought them to our usual booth. How nice is that?

We always drink water when we go out and generally when we are at home. My husband drinks orange juice sometimes and coffee occasionally, and I drink herbal tea, but about 90% of the time, we drink water.

I’ve done my share of drinking other things: soda, milkshakes, beer, wine, but that’s behind me now, ever since I quit drinking things high in calories and low in nutrients. I made that decision about 25 years ago. Wow, has it been that long?

Drinking water is the best thing I can do for myself, and I admit that I don’t always drink as much as a should. And then there’s that whole fluoride thing, so I try to get my water from a variety of sources and not just drink tap water. I’d like to think our filter gets rid of fluoride, but I really have no idea if it does or not. I think a little tap water now and then isn’t going to hurt me. But one other thing I don’t drink any more is  is hose water – water from the garden hose. It’s supposed to be bad for you, and I can imagine all the bugs that have crawled in the hose. But I thought nothing of drinking water from a garden hose as a kid or young adult.

Memories of drinking from a garden hose remind me of the following Huffington Post article which I hope you will enjoy as much as I did or more. Just don’t let your kids drink from a garden hose. Or your pets either.

Do feel free to drink from the stream of consciousness, though.

Today’s SOC prompt was the word, “drink.” Visit Linda at the link below for more information:

https://lindaghill.com/2016/06/24/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-june-2516/

Here are the rules:

1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing, (typos can be fixed) and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.

2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.

3. There will be a prompt every week. I will post the prompt here on my blog on Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” “Begin with the word ‘The’,” or simply a single word to get your started.

4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours.  Your link will show up in my comments for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top.

5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read everyone’s! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later, or go to the previous week, by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find right below the “Like” button on my post.

6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!

7. As a suggestion, tag your post “SoCS” and/or “#SoCS” for more exposure and more views.

8. Have fun!

  1. I had a friend who cut his leg. He washed it off from the garden hose and ended up with a very bad infection. Still, I’m not too afraid of the hose. Ours is never laying on the ground, and never open to bugs. That said, I’ll go inside for my next drink 🙂

  2. Who says drinking from a garden hose is bad for you? The bugs are good protein…

  3. i’ve learned to let
    the water run a bit
    before drinking 🙂

  4. Drinking from a garden hose… that’s one thing I’ve never done – and now i kind of want to!

    • 🙂 So you’re tempted to live on the edge, huh? Well, if you do, they say to let it run for a bit, like after watering plants. Or you could just squirt somebody. Haven’t done that lately but it used to be fun.

  5. Garden hose water was the BEST when I was a kid!!! 😀

  6. Drank from the garden hose, played outside all day, stoop ball, Parcheesi, Clue, Monopoly, Jump Rope, Potsy, having Pea Shooter wars, and host of other games. We used to stop at different houses for different treats, Hot Dogs on the grill, Watermelon in the evening, and then spitting the pits at each other. Lighting punks and swirling them in the air to see who could make the best designs, putting on puppet shows with home made puppets, and a host of other activities that we would dream up. Oh yes, and drinking from the garden hose along with every other kid in the neighborhood.
I loved summer, and visit it often in my memories. I am now 73 and still kicking.

    • I, too, drank for the garden hose a lot as a child and young adult. There are more important things to avoid for sure! I love your memories. I played monopoly, cards, and did a lot of bike riding without a helmet. Now I’d recommend a helmet, of course.
