One-Liner Wednesday: Jesus and Socialism

“Jesus Christ actually “out-socialized” the socialists. He said that in His kingdom the greatest one would be the servant of all (see Matthew 23:11).”

Oswald Chambers (1874-1917)

Wikipedia describes Oswald Chambers as a “Scottish Baptist and Holiness Movement evangelist and teacher, best known for the devotional My Utmost for His Highest, where this quote comes from in the reading for February 25. He often rubs me the wrong way with his stern language. But my small weekly study group likes his devotional, and every now and then, Oswald Chambers offers an interesting surprise. Even someone we don’t agree with much might have something that appeals to us, and we can disagree with even our favorite leaders.

  1. That’s a great quote!

    • I was surprised at the source since Chambers’ writing seems pretty conservative to me. My guess is he was being objective about the word, socialist, and had a good understanding of Jesus. Glad you like it.

  2. I have the Oswald Chambers devotional, given to me a number of years ago by a friend. I know what you mean about sometimes harsh (or difficult to understand) language, but I dove into it on occasion and found some worthwhile tidbits. This is what I find funny, when Christians act like chicken little when it comes to socialism or socialist behavior. Who do they think Jesus was and what his teachings mean? I don’t understand how that can be skewed or misunderstood.

Thanks for the insightful quote, JoAnna.

    • I agree! I suspect some people have trouble being objective about the what socialism means and how it relates to what Jesus did and taught. Thank you for your insightful comment, Mary!

  3. Thank you for sharing!!.. well, as the universe knows I am not into religion myself, but I feel that there are elements in all of today’s world societies that are closed minded and will deny any thought that may be contrary to their ideology, and some may even resort to violence… in the past one could create a “image”, but with today’s technology and knowledge reality visible to everyone… hopefully with that same technology, the world will gather together and make this world a better place.. .:)

    Until we meet again..
    May your troubles be less
    Your blessings be more
    And nothing but happiness
    Come through your door
    (Irish Saying)

    • Even though you’re not into religion, you have a deep spirituality that I admire. I’m hoping with you that the world will gather together and make it a better place.
