SoCS: Resting is Not the Same as Giving Up and Why I Gave Up on The Rings of Power

Today’s prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “throw in the towel.” Use the phrase “throw in the towel” somewhere in your post. Enjoy!

To “throw in the towel” means to quit something, maybe give up on something, after having worked on it for a while. Where does this phrase come from? Is it a football term? Don’t those football guys carry towels around? lol. I’m not a big fan of football. Maybe that’s un-American to some folks. Okay, the sport itself is okay I guess, okay. Stop saying okay. But I never really got the huge national extravagant $$$ part of it. But I didn’t really want to go there.

In general, where does one throw the towel? In the laundry basket? If a towel is dirty, then you should throw it in. That brings me back to what I really wanted to write about, and that is that sometimes it’s okay to quit. If something is not healthy, if it’s not working, and you’ve tried to the point of insanity or toxicity, and the fate of the world does not depend on your endeavor, then throw in the towel.

As a side note, resting or taking a break is not the same as quitting. I made a meme for that a while ago.

But sometimes, you just need to throw in the towel. About a week ago, I made the decision to throw in the towel on Amazon Prime which I got for the sole purpose of watching The Rings of Power. This was not an easy decision, because I am a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings (like some people are huge fans of football.) I can watch those movies, and The Hobbit movies over and over again, usually while doing stuff on the computer and stopping to watch when my favorite parts come on, like the parts with the elves.

After much consideration, including the cost of Amazon Prime and that I still want to watch Season 2 of Picard and Star Trek, Strange New Worlds on Paramount which costs less by the way, I decided that The Rings of Power was too dark for me. There were some characters I liked okay, but the orcs seemed a lot scarier, and the series just felt continually heavy. The final decision was the episode (still in season 1) where things happen to horses. I will not go into details (except to say there is fire involved), and I know it’s just a movie and those things didn’t really happen to the horses, but when you love animals and have a good imagination, it can be traumatic. And sometimes horses do get hurt on movie sets. So there. It’s done. There are plenty of other things to watch and books to read, and when the old LOTR and Hobbit movies come on cable, I’ll watch them again.

I had to look up the origin of throwing in the towel. It comes from boxing. The trainer throws in the towel to save his boxer when it is clear he’s not going to win. That way, he can live to fight another day, which brings us back to the idea that it’s okay to take a break and rest a while before going back into the ring of life.

And now, a message from Gandalf.

SoCS: Trip or Trek ~ Going Boldly into My Own Backyard

What a long, strange trip it’s been.

Trip is our prompt for today.

Have you ever tripped over your own two feet?

I have.

Mostly, I trip over vines in my urban forest of a backyard.

Working on clearing the paths now that we have a crazy dog.

I want to be able to see him and make sure he’s not trying to escape.

Plus, I don’t want to have so many hiding places for snakes that could bite him.

We’ve wanted to take a trip for a while, but it’s hard with a dog.

Did I mention he is crazy?

Oh, he’s a sweetheart in the house.

But if he’s outside and there’s a squirrel, or another animal, or a person, he goes crazy wanting to get at it mostly in a friendly way. He wants to be everybody’s friend. But maybe not so much the squirrels and outside cats. He needs work on his manners outside, as in calming down a few notches.

But maybe we will take him to the mountains one day.

David gets his stitches out from the dog walking injury on Monday.

He’ll still have to wear a brace for like ten more weeks! Really? That’s a long time for a pinky tendon.

No trips until after that. Unless they are short trips.

Meanwhile, my goal is to try to not trip over anything.

Mindful steps. That’s the idea.

If you have a good imagination,

You can go on a trip without leaving your home.

You don’t need drugs either.

There’s always Star Trek.

There’s a character on ST Enterprise named, Trip.

The thing I like about Star Trek bloopers, aka, gag reels, is that people who are usually serious (in character) get silly. I could watch them all day. But I won’t. This one has ?Spanish subtitles in case you want to learn Spanish whatever language that is. Or in case the subtitles are your primary language.

I wrote that last night. This morning is VERY windy, and limbs are coming down. A cold front is coming in. Guess I really will be going

….the electricity went out so i lost internet on my laptop. I didn’t realize my sentence got cut off til i just looked here with my phone which is acting wonkY. The wind has calmed but the electricity is still out. Time to get out the guitar or paint something.

Self-Care, Dog Training, and Star Trek

Your mission if you decide to accept it is to use the word, “mission,” in today’s Just Jot it January post. Thanks to Fandango for the prompt and to our host, Linda Hill for #JusJoJan. To learn more, click HERE.

I wrote a mission statement about 15 years ago. It had something to do with nature, animals, spirituality, and combining my Christian beliefs with my love for creation. I’ve done some of that over the years and hope to do more.

Having a mission is serious. I’m not sure if I want to be that serious right now. My ear is giving me twinges, like tiny shock waves every now and then, and my doctor is closed because it might sleet later. But they were kind enough to call me back and give me an appointment for Monday.

An ice storm is in the forecast here on the Carolina Coast, so many places are closed, including the rescue mission thrift store where David works. He came out of retirement to return to the director position when it became vacant. He says he likes it. As long as he likes it, that’s okay.

Today, my mission is to take care of my health. I’ve also been doing are working with our new dog Marley on leave it, drop it, get it, sit stay, down stay, and walking on a leash without pulling so much. He does well as long as he doesn’t see a squirrel. Squirrels put him into hyperdrive. Marley and Mama Cat still only know each other by sound and smell. I took him out on the catio earlier to smell around as suggested by the trainer. He was very excited, but I was able to get him to lie down stay for several seconds. The training treats help. Training Marley is sort of a mini mission. Home improvement projects, like the catio, are mini missions.

My neighbor is on a mission to save our downtown library. The county wants to shrink it, combine it with a reduced local museum, and add offices and condos to the already congested historic downtown area. The neighbor who is fighting this plan is in her 80s and has a lot of smarts and energy. I’ve helped out some but wouldn’t even try to keep up with her. Same thing with my husband David. Taking care of myself means not trying to keep up with high energy extroverts. I’ll keep working on my mini missions, reading, blogging, painting, volunteering at the farm animal sanctuary, and watching Star Trek. That’s plenty!

When the first episode of Star Trek Next Generation came out and I heard Patrick Stewart say the mission statement as “….to boldly go where no one has gone before,” instead of “no man,” I cheered out loud.

SoCS: Senior Moments, Mini Skirts, and Yoga Pants

Well, it’s official.

I’m a senior citizen. Today is my 65th birthday. (As you’re reading this on Saturday, because I’m writing it on the eve of my 65th birthday.)

What is the minimum age at which a person can claim forgetfulness and confusion is due to a “senior moment?” I know some folks could say it’s in your fifties. I have been getting a senior discount at the movies for maybe ten years. Oh, I miss going the movie theatre. Maybe some day that will happen again. I’ve been having senior moments more often, though not every day and with no serious consequences. If a person has a touch of ADD or head in the clouds since childhood…. but those aren’t senior moments are they? Now, I can call them senior moments. Now, I have Medicare. Hope I don’t have to use it much, but it will probably be better than what I had.

Going back to the prompt remember mini skirts? My dad hated them. I think they started in the 60s. Late 60s maybe. Not very comfortable. I used to wear shorts under my skirt in junior high school. And how could I think that was okay to have the original classic Star Trek female crew wearing those impossibly short dresses? Now, it makes me cringe. In the pilot episode the psychiatrist wore pants. Good for her. But later, it was ridiculous, but I had no idea it was ridiculous, since I wore mini skirts. I’m not even going to look for a video.

Maxi skirts are much better. I have maxi skirts now – made from stretchy material like my yoga pants which I love to wear almost all the time now. Because I CAN. Yoga pants, sweat shirts. Yeah, I might get dressed up again some day, maybe even for my birthday dinner. But only if I want to. The plan is to go hiking in the afternoon. Doesn’t matter how far, as long as I get out into the woods and walk around on my 65th birthday.

A couple of days ago, I found a sketch I drew probably in the 70s. Mini skirts were still around, because I remember wearing one during my senior year in high school. Anyway, here’s the sketch. No idea how I came up with it. Probably had something to do with my head being in the clouds, naturally, not even on drugs necessarily, but lets not go there.

There’s a story here, right? Feel free to add a caption or title for this sketch.

Today’s SoCS prompt was: “mini/maxi.” Use “mini” (the smallest of something) or “maxi” (the largest) or both in your post. Have fun!

SoCS: Dog Collars, Feral Cats, and Classic Trek

Today’s prompt: “collar.” Use it as a verb, a noun, or metaphorically. Bonus points for using it in all three ways! Enjoy!

Add a couple letters to collar and you get collards. Collards get better after they get cold in the ground. I wonder if it’s too late to plant them. They do take up a lot of room. I like them raw in salad or steamed lightly.

Before I started adding letters to collar, I thought about the dog collars handing in what used to be the dog room. We have no more dogs now. They’ve all crossed over the rainbow bridge. But their collars, at least three of them, still hand in the dog room with tags and leashes attached.

Dogs probably would prefer not to wear collars to bed. I used to take them off when we were in for the night. But if you only get out the collars when it’s time for outside or walks, then collars would be very good things!

The dog room might turn into a cat room if I bring home Mama Cat from the church. She’s been there for over 4 years and will go crazy if/when I trap her, but she misses her daughter Gray who is still missing. I worry about Mama who has become less feral in her loneliness. I bet she would really hate a collar. It’s going to be a process, taming this feral mama, but we’re making progress. I might trap her and bring her home at the end of September or early October when I’ll be home for a while. She will probably hate the smell of the dog room. But I hope she will grow to like being here. I’m getting ahead of myself. Time will tell.

I haven’t given up on Gray. Must think positive thoughts that she is safe and loved, somewhere out there. When I get depressed about Gray or politics, Star Trek helps. I believe there’s a Star Trek episode about collars.

That James Kirk. A shock collar won’t stop him from kissing a woman. Or knocking her gently on the chin so that she falls into his arms unconscious. He could’ve talked her into helping him….. But it all worked out. And nobody really got hurt.

I don’t think I would ever use a shock collar on a dog without testing it on myself. Since I wouldn’t want to test it on myself, I wouldn’t use it on a dog.

Remove your collars! Run free!

SoCS: Beyond

Today’s Stream of Consciousness prompt: Take the title of the last movie you watched (just the title, not the premise of the movie), and base your post on that title.

colored glass in window 2

She loved decorating her little home

With blue glass in the windows,

Feeding the birds,

Taking care of her plants,

Talking with the trees.

She loved being safe

Beyond the madding crowd,

Beyond the political angst,

Beyond conventional thinking.

Sometimes though,

Like when twisting from warrior 2

To triangle pose,

Looking up through the pine trees

Glistening in the sun,

She imagined exploring

Beyond the picket fence

Into new realms

Of star ships and adventure,

Or old realms

Of elves and wizards.

She had big ideas

For such a simple woman

Reaching beyond the dichotomy

Of good and evil,

Rich and poor,

Beyond i phones and laptops,

Beyond brand names and fashion,

Beyond religion and government.

Part of her wanted to explore,

To journey into deeper, broader dimensions.

But sometimes she settled for comfort

And wore sneakers with a skirt.

The last movie I watched was Star Trek Beyond. It’s far from my favorite Star Trek movie, but it’s fun and full of action and adventure. I wonder if it’s odd that I love nature and Jesus with a passion, but I also like science fiction. A lot. Then of course there’s The Lord of the Rings….

Another movie I watched recently was Ender’s Game. I just want to mention it because the ending surprised me with an important message. If you ever get a chance to watch Ender’s Game, make sure you watch it to the very end.  Here’s a hint:

Anyway, here’s my favorite trailer for Star Trek Beyond.

Home Planet

FA8B561A-59CA-4E63-8F22-815B036DD1A4

Today’s prompt for the stream is :astronomical.” That makes me think of astronomy which leads me to Star Trek.  Some of you know I’m a big fan of The Trek and that Spock was my first crush in the late 60s and especially when my dad was in Vietnam. One might be surprised for my love of Star Trek since I love this good ol’ planet earth and get motion sickness at the drop of a hat, so I couldn’t go boldly off planet without some really good meds for fixing that. Also, my main genre of writing so far is nonfiction/romance/relationships, but who knows, maybe I’ll write some science fiction some day. I do have some ideas….. But The Trek made a big impression when I needed stability and escape in my life.

I’ve gotten into reading Star Trek novels lately for escape, and they work like a charm. Plus, now that we have BBC, I can watch reruns of Voyager and Next Generation which are my favorites. I like that women have important roles in those series. But I also like reading old ST novels that show James T. Kirk having self doubts and fears because he had such an over confident, maybe even pompous, swaggery thing going on back in the 60s show. It just goes to show that we all have our issues.

Going back to my love for the earth and exploratory science fiction, I really do believe that our efforts should be mostly spent taking care of our home planet, Mother Earth, because right now, there is no planet B. Even if there was a planet B, I still love Earth, and she who has given us so much, deserves our protection and respect. As Spock says,

Spock One Liner on Ecosystem

…Or any kind of wealth. I guess imaginary wealth means you can’t eat money. Maybe all the man-made structures and financial accounts however “astronomical” they might seem, are really not much at all compared to the beautiful and life-giving life forms of creation here on Earth. Speaking of which, here are some photos I’ve taken in western North Carolina:

lake trail lake view.jpg

lake at twilight vertical

River from the lake trail dam.jpg

river through trees.jpg

Jess looking at hole in tree

My granddaughter is curious.

I guess I’ll go boldly in my fantasies and keep my feet planted firmly on this precious home planet where there is much to explore and love. Thank you to all who go boldly in defense of planet earth. I will join you when I can.

If God is like a wise parent, wouldn’t God expect us to take care of our home planet first before we’re ready to find a new one?  We still have a lot of growing up to do as a species.

What do you think? How much money/effort should we put into exploring space compared to protecting Earth?

My Brain Runneth Over

FA8B561A-59CA-4E63-8F22-815B036DD1A4

“ad/add/AD (Anno Domini).” Use one, use ’em all–bonus points if you fit them all into your post. Have fun!  That’s our prompt for today.

I looked up Anno Domini: In the year of our Lord, abbreviated as AD. I knew that once. There are a lot of things I knew once, like a lot of French words. French was one of my favorite subjects in high school. I used to could speak it well. Not fluently, but I coulda got by in France at the age of 19. Now, I could say please and thank you, and “Where is the library?” Maybe it would come back to me quickly. Spanish would have been more practical to take and maybe some day I’ll learn it. It’s one of those many things I’d like to do, but not on the top of the list.

The more stuff I add to my brain, the more likely it is to get lost. (The stuff I add, not my brain, necessarily. Somebody’s brain got lost on Star Trek once. Probably Spock’s.)

All that French is still in there with algebra and history, but finding it is another matter. But I don’t use algebra except to help my kids with their homework which is not necessary now since they’re grown.

My brain can get addled. I’ve thought I had a little ADD which I believe is on a spectrum like autism. Learning differences. Best thing I can do now is have a sense of humor about it. Plus, get exercise, learn new things, and do crossword puzzles which I am NOT going to get addicted to because there are other things I want to do. Like take a self-defense class. That would be good for my brain. If I can find someone who has experience teaching self-defense to people over 60, that might keep me from hurting myself. Better take my bone medicine for osteoporosis. Don’t want to fall and break a hip.

Don’t know how to work ad into this. I’m not going to start with ads for self-defense classes but might ask around. I’ve heard the sheriff’s department teaches a basic one, so I’ll start there. I have to be careful not to add too much to my plate, literally and figuratively. First I need to get back to my permanent address and finish with my parent’s house. Making progress on the attic. Finding all kinds of stuff up there. Someday I’ll do a post on that.

Do you think the brain can actually get full? Like a file cabinet? I guess it’s more like a computer. There is a limit to what you can add. Which comes back to de-cluttering – not adding more clothes to my closet until I donate some. Not buying any more stuff from thrift stores (my weakness). Not adding. Subtracting. Less is more room, more space, more freedom. But that only works with stuff. It’s okay to add more love and time – quality time, and memories. Can we add memory to our brains?

Yep. It was Spock’s brain that got lost. Here’s the condensed version:

Trek through the SoCS Vortex

FA8B561A-59CA-4E63-8F22-815B036DD1A4

Today’s prompt for #JusJoJan and Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “television.” Linda said to: Talk about your favorite show, past, present, or future, or about the apparatus itself. Enjoy!

Before computers and the internet, television was the only addictive screen. My dad watched TV a lot, and at certain times of my life, I have depended on TV for company, entertainment, and maybe even to get through big life challenges.  Star Trek may have saved my life, or at least kept me off the street during my confusing adolescence. As I’ve shared before, Spock was my first crush. Dependable, rational, competent. I try to remember this when I see these qualities in my husband. But my husband smiles more, and it’s okay that I’m the flower child.

Star Trek drew me to science, up to a point. Maybe it helped me do well in school, though I was already a “good student” except for a few blips and detours….

Since I only have basic cable now, the closest I can get to Star Trek on TV is The Orville, on Fox.  It’s like ST but with Fox humor which can sometimes be stupid, though I’m willing to overlook it, and the last episode was more serious. I’ve started reading Star Trek novels which could become addictive. Just finishing up one about the Voyager crew. Voyager and Next Generation were my favorites. I liked the strong female roles. When Next Gen’s first episode came on TV and I heard Patrick Stewart say, “To boldly go where no one has gone before,” instead of Kirk’s “where no man has gone before,”  I hooted and cheered, “YES!”

Star Trek offers possibilities of hope. The themes are about overcoming challenges, teamwork, diversity, and hope. I think those are the things that have always drawn me to the show which is more than just a show. We NEED those values in the world. Okay, there is an element of escape – to go boldly, to explore new worlds which I would have trouble doing in real life since I get motion sickness at the drop of a hat.

Television, like the internet, has a lot of crap, but it also has a lot of good that can inspire us to become better than we are, or just enjoy some healthy escape. If we are selective, we can learn cool stuff from television. For example, did you see that big disc of ice in the river in Maine?  Maybe it’s a message from our future, or aliens. Or maybe the river is trying to tell us something by making the shape of the earth.

They said the temperature changes create a vortex. Vortex is one of the Star Trek words. Where there’s a vortex, there’s always something important going on.  (Except that it would make me nauseous in real life. )

Star Trek has always been mind expanding for me. I like that they deal with ethical dilemmas. My favorite episode, or one of them that made a big impression, was “The Devil in the Dark,” where the so called “monster” turned out to be just protecting her babies. Of course it was Spock who found that out with a mind meld. He was the real hero of the show.  “The Devil in the Dark” was also Leonard Nimoy’s “favorite episode,” according to the title on this video.

Thanks for letting me go on about The Trek again. Maybe the future will have better remedies for motion sickness for the vortex travels.

Here are the rules for SoCS:

1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing, (typos can be fixed) and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.

2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.

3. There will be a prompt every week. I will post the prompt here on my blog on Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” “Begin with the word ‘The’,” or simply a single word to get your started.

4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours. Your link will show up in my comments for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top. NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, such as Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.

5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read everyone’s! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later, or go to the previous week, by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find right below the “Like” button on my post.

6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!

7. As a suggestion, tag your post “SoCS” and/or “#SoCS” for more exposure and more views.

8. Have fun!
