SoCS: Pins, Buttons, and What NOT to Drink

Here’s today’s prompt: “pin.” Use it as a noun, use it as a verb, use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

Remember bobby pins? My mom had a lot. There might even be one around here. They were for your hair, like mini barrets. She would put her hair up in little pincurls and sleep in them overnight with an x of double bobby pins in each curl. Better than those big plastic curlers in the days before curling irons or whatever people are using these days.

Straight pins could be (and still are) useful for sewing a hem or keeping two pieces of fabric lined up while you sew them together with a needle.

Pintrest is so full of everything. I don’t keep up with my account. There are only so many hours in a day and so many other things to do.

I don’t wear many pins. My mom had a lot. I pinned her angel pin to the lapel of my black blazer which I used to wear a lot but have not worn in a long time. Maybe I’ll wear it this Christmas.

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? I guess it depends on the size of the angels, and several other factors that have something to do with divine magic.

There are also pins that I have called buttons – campaign buttons, cause buttons, save the whales buttons – but they are really pins, because they have pins and you can wear them on your shirt or purse, or whatever. I had a big collection once. Now it’s smaller and kept in a glass container in the kitchen. Why in the kitchen? I have no idea. One button/pin says, “Get stoned. Drink wet cement.” When I was a substance abuse counselor, one of my clients gave that to me. It was funny. And weird. (Do NOT drink wet cement!)

Now I’m going to my pictures and type in “pin” and see where that leads.

Sewing Memories and Off-Grid Fantasies in the Stream of Consciousness

Today’s Stream of Consciousness prompt is: “so/sow/sew.” Use one, use ’em all, use ’em any way you’d like. Bonus points if you start and end with any of them. Enjoy!

So, I use the word “so” a lot. I suppose it could mean, therefore, but sometimes it’s just one of those words that allow me to gather my thoughts. So, I used to sew a lot, I use “a lot” a lot, too…. In junior high school (which we not call middle school) I took home economics just so I could learn to sew and make my own clothes. I made a couple dresses and a scooped neck shirt/blouse that I wore in tenth grade to the party where my high school sweetheart and I met. I still remember that blouse. It was white with green print. And I think it looked good with my red hair. So he said when I interviewed him for the book.

I started out sewing on one of those old, black, iron pedal machines that use foot power on the pedal instead of electricity. I flexed both feet back and forth on the flat rectangular foot pedal which made the wheel turn and the needle go up and down. They had a few electric sewing machines, and I eventually got to use one of those. I know this sounds like I grew up in the dark ages, but this wasn’t that long ago – in the late sixties. The pedal machine was actually kinda fun.

I like the idea of a machine that doesn’t use electricity. Just imagine: years ago, people made all their clothes by hand. Sewing by hand can be fun, though time consuming. Once I made some curtains by hand. Where did I find the time? It was before we had personal computers, so I could watch TV while sewing on the couch. Yeah, I always liked TV, though the computer has taken the place of that for the most part.

What would it be like to live off the grid? With no TV and sewing by hand, reading books by a river, or by candlelight. Sowing seeds and reaping a harvest of potatoes, corn, beans, and lettuce? I think I would like it as long as I had toilet paper, clean, fresh water, and it didn’t get too cold. And if I had my own space, and a shower. And if it didn’t last too long. I’d like to try it for a week and see if I really liked it. But off the grid doesn’t mean without electricity, does it? Maybe having a little electricity, from an alternative, sustainable source, would be the ideal living situation. I could sow seeds, sew buttons, and sing songs like: do, re, mi, fa, so……

Bonus points!

SOCS

If you’d like to join in the Stream of Consciousness or just watch it flow by, visit our host, Linda Hill at:

https://lindaghill.com/2017/02/10/the-friday-reminder-and-prompt-for-socs-feb-1117/

Here are the rules:

1. Your post must be stream of consciousness writing, meaning no editing, (typos can be fixed) and minimal planning on what you’re going to write.

2. Your post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. One sentence – one thousand words. Fact, fiction, poetry – it doesn’t matter. Just let the words carry you along until you’re ready to stop.

3. There will be a prompt every week. I will post the prompt here on my blog on Friday, along with a reminder for you to join in. The prompt will be one random thing, but it will not be a subject. For instance, I will not say “Write about dogs”; the prompt will be more like, “Make your first sentence a question,” “Begin with the word ‘The’,” or simply a single word to get your started.

4. Ping back! It’s important, so that I and other people can come and read your post! For example, in your post you can write “This post is part of SoCS:” and then copy and paste the URL found in your address bar at the top of this post into yours.  Your link will show up in my comments for everyone to see. The most recent pingbacks will be found at the top. NOTE: Pingbacks only work from WordPress sites. If you’re self-hosted or are participating from another host, such as Blogger, please leave a link to your post in the comments below.

5. Read at least one other person’s blog who has linked back their post. Even better, read everyone’s! If you’re the first person to link back, you can check back later, or go to the previous week, by following my category, “Stream of Consciousness Saturday,” which you’ll find right below the “Like” button on my post.

6. Copy and paste the rules (if you’d like to) in your post. The more people who join in, the more new bloggers you’ll meet and the bigger your community will get!

7. As a suggestion, tag your post “SoCS” and/or “#SoCS” for more exposure and more views.

8. Have fun!
