Boldly Go and Keep Your Eyes on the Stars, or the Road, Depending on What You’re driving.

Linda Hill’s Stream of Consciousness Prompt for today is, “view.”

I immediately thought of the wonderful views I enjoyed last weekend in the Blue Ridge Mountains which I included in Thursday’s post. The view of the sunset from Beech Mountain was more than I could have ever hoped for.

But I really want to write about Star Trek, because this is the 50th anniversary of the Trek. I’ve written about this before, my love for Star Trek, how it got me through a tough time when my dad was in Vietnam and my mom was having nervous breakdowns, and how my first crush, Mr. Spock gave me stability. He was so dependable, so logical, so tall. (I was 5’7 in 5th grade.)

So I would view Star Trek, in the bedroom shared with my mom and sister as we stayed with friends or relatives that year dad was in Nam, on the little TV. I guess it was little compared to the flat screens most of us have now. I remember the view of the TV screen being about the size of a record album. But my imagination enhanced the show greatly. I had, and have, an excellent imagination. I think that was my way of dealing with challenges, to escape into fantasy. I could imagine myself being rescued by Mr. Spock, maybe wisked into the future to explore strange new worlds, as if I was right there.

Have you ever imagined, fantasized so clearly that you could actually see the scene you were imagining instead of what was really in front of your eyes? DON’T DO THIS WHILE DRIVING! But I have to admit, I’ve done this while driving. Not intentionally, of course. I’ve gone from point A to point B a mile away and not remembered seeing the road. Yet I must have seen the road on some level, even stopped at traffic lights, I hope. It’s pretty amazing when you stop to think about it. I was seeing a movie in my head while my eyes were still watching the road.

THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED! DRIVE MINDFULLY!

If I was at the helm of a star ship, I would drive mindfully. I would not fantasize living in the 21st century in a little house on the coast. Would I? But driving a star ship would definitely be a fantasy, unless they develop much better, long acting motion sickness meds, because, alas, I am notorious for motion sickness. I have to keep my eyes on the view ahead. I can’t read in a car or look at my phone for long, especially on twisty turns, without getting queasy.  Yet, I can watch a movie in my head while driving. DON’T DO THAT! which would indicate my eyes really are watching the road, because I don’t get queasy day dreaming while driving, which I should not be doing at all, so yeah, JUST DON’T.
I won’t be driving a star ship. I could be the ship’s counselor though. 🙂 Just pass the new and improved, Galaxy class Dramamine.

Here’s a scene from one of my favorite episodes, “The Devil in the Dark.” Spock found out that she wasn’t a devil at all. She was just trying to protect her babies. An episode where point of view made all the difference.

Allergic to Fun? There’s A Cure for That.

The second I saw his message on Facebook, my heart beat like a drum. A happy, excited drum. I had to remind myself constantly to keep my feet on the ground. But we knew something important was going on from our second first date in July of 2011.

Now, he is my second husband, my first love and my last love.

I hope you’re not tired of hearing about this.

But here’s something I’ve never revealed: He (my second husband) sort of reminds me of my first crush. When I was about 11 years old I had a crush on a TV character. It was a time of chaos and inconsistency with my father in Vietnam and my mother’s nervous break downs. Consistency and order was offered by the second in command of the USS Enterprise, the logical science officer, Mr. Spock. Yes, he was my first crush.

My second husband is not a Vulcan, but he can be pretty serious when he’s absorbed in something. He has a certain arch in his eyebrow that can be endearingly familiar. My first husband told me I needed to “lighten up.” But my second husband told me, when we first started dating for the second time, that he was “allergic to fun.” I didn’t believe him. He hadn’t been allergic to fun when we dated in the early 1970s. Back then, he was a gentleman. Back then he only got as far as second base. (We were 15 and 16.) But he had a sense of humor. He still has a sense of humor and a nice smile. He has a tendency to work too hard, but he’s learning to relax. The ocean helps. He likes to go put his feet in the water. I don’t think he’s allergic to fun. I think he’s just not used to it, having worked hard for so many years. But we’re nearing retirement age, not that we’ll ever retire completely, and he’s going to have to get used to fun.

Even Mr. Spock mellowed with age, and with the help of those spores from those funny flowers, he had fun. I wonder where I can find something like that.

I don’t know how the captain wasn’t affected at all by the spores. They should have let him have just a little fun before coming back to his responsible self.

We all need a little fun. Or a lot.

Temper, Trek, and the Stream of Consciousness

They say red heads have bad tempers. My hair is not as red as it used to be, but I’ve never had a bad temper. I don’t even remember any other red heads having bad tempers. Not that there are a lot of us around. I have a reputation, mostly on the job, of being a calm person. Yet, I don’t always feel calm inside my head. I have a considerable amount of anxiety. That’s probably why I like to teach meditation to my  clients, because I need reminders. I don’t like feeling anxious or angry. The times I’ve felt angry enough to lose my temper feel alien to me. Alien like going into a temporal anomaly. Where did that come from? Oh, my stream of consciousness.

Sometimes I’ve been tempted to let myself get really angry and blow up. It seems like fun for other people, or else why would they do it? I believe anger can be addicting. But I don’t like it. Not one bit. Except the cussing alone in my car, but that was last week’s SOC post….

Where was I?

Losing my temper, as tempted as I might be to try it, almost always feels wrong to me. I can feel anger, but I don’t like to yell a lot. I get shaky and feel slightly sick in my stomach, when I come close to losing my temper. Maybe it has something to do with Spock. That’s right. I’m going to sci-fi again. I think I need a Star Trek fix. It’s been so long. Spock, my first crush back when the original Trek first aired, almost never got angry. He kept his emotions under control with meditation and logic. I admired that in him because my life at age 11 was chaotic. That’s another story that must be somewhere on this blog.

So, what does this have to do with Anything Is Possible?

It’s possible to control our emotions, and not let our emotions control us.

It’s possible for me to feel and express anger without losing my temper. (My daughter would tell you that I have lost my temper plenty of times, but it’s really only a couple of times that I’ve really lost it.)
