SoCS: Letting Go and Tossing it Up

Today’s prompt is simply the word, “toss,” with the encouragement to use it any way we like and to enjoy!

It’s a toss up. Will I toss and turn tonight or sleep well and deeply? I think I will lean toward the latter. I’m in the mountains this weekend, and fresh air will help me sleep. That’s what Mom always said. The grand kids are here, and we’re not as cuddly as usual because of the thing. But we did a little hike this afternoon and will go on a longer one tomorrow which will be Saturday.

I’m writing this on Friday night as usual. The sky has a pink glow beyond the abundance of trees. I’ve been wanting to find a kayak to use on the nearby lake.  Been looking on line and nothing is jumping out at me. Plus I need  would like to have it delivered – something I’ve never done with something that big. Craig’s list doesn’t have anything in the area. When things aren’t happening in my expected time frame, I have to remember that God might have a plan, even for something as minor as a kayak. So, I’m going to toss this desire up to God. It worked with my desire for a compatible partner.

Tossing a thing up to God does not relieve me of responsibility.  I still have to look around and take care of business. I just don’t need to fret over it. Or anything. So, sometimes, the fretting goes away for a little while, until it comes back. But those moments of letting go and trusting the timing do feel good. Like taking off a heavy pack and tossing it someplace for safekeeping. Or tossing our cares to the wind so we can run free, at least for a while.  When it’s time, we pick up the responsibilities that are truly ours – our actions and words, thoughts, and prayers, hopes and dreams…. perhaps for peace starting in our own minds and our own hearts.

Here’s a recent photo I took because I thought I saw angels in the sky.  By the time I took the shot, they had already started to disperse. What do you see?

Letting Go: An Adventure in Acupuncture and Beyond

A few weeks ago, I went to see my acupuncturist for for abdominal cramps that had been irritating me for a few days. My stomach felt constricted, tied in little knots. Maybe I’d eaten too much heavy food and needed more exercise.

Lying on the table, I listened to the gentle music with needles in my feet for grounding and a couple in my tummy and  wondered why she had put needles in my right hand and not my left.  An  image came to me of a boat on the water. The acupuncture table became the boat. A parcel of trash floated by and I reached into the water and  picked it up. I saw myself carrying the trash around wondering what to do with it. Then, back on the table/boat, I  imagined a trash can to my left, physically reached over, and held the trash over the side.

“Just let it go,” came the voice. So I  opened my hand and released the trash.

As my mind came fully back into the room, I thought about how much stuff I need to let go of, like the issues that belong to my grown up ADULT children, the clutter in my parents’ house which belongs to me now that they’re gone, and all my own clutter, both physical and mental…. The list goes on.

I moved my left hand, the one left free of needles, over my belly as if gathering whatever I needed to let go of. Then I carried it to the left of the table and let it go on the floor beside me shaking my hand a little. I did this a few more times, saying, “Let it go.” Then, I held my open hand out to the left to receive whatever gifts God wanted to give me.

That day, I fasted with water, apple juice, coconut water, and vegetable broth. In the afternoon, I meandered in my back yard and did some lite yoga. I felt something on my right hand thinking it might be the first mosquito bite of the year. But it was a lady bug walking on my right hand, the one that had the needles in it that morning. It seemed like the lady bug was biting me. But then I realized it felt more like tiny electrical impulses moving in my hand as if the lady bug activated remnants of the acupuncture. I took the lady bug to a tree branch. It climbed briefly, then flew away.

I’m feeling much better now, but years of experience have taught me that letting go is an ongoing process. Maybe this song will be a reminder, along with lady bugs.

Motherly Love

What a surprise to feel that pull on my heart,

Maternal instincts beyond my control.

Men can have those feelings, too.

But my heart, soul, and body,

Were in it for the long haul.

The intoxicating smell

 of soft downy heads

Embedded a bond

Stronger than

Smelly diapers,

Projectile vomiting,

Toddler tantrums,

And adolescent dramas

When I wondered who took my son

And twisted his devotion into gnarly knots?

Who hitched my girl to a marathon ride

On that emotional roller coaster

Without my permission?

Yet they both survived

the bullies and angst

To grow stronger,

To fly solo.

I open my hands

To. Let. Them. Go.

But my heart strings

Stretch across the miles

Through darkness and light,

Because a mother’s love never ends.

The Blessings of Letting Go

I’m posting this from the mountains of North Carolina just after midnight. Yesterday was cold and misty, so my friend and I stayed in most of the day and enjoyed a fire. Right now, the temperature is in the upper 20s and a little snow has fallen. Since I’m on vacation and will be seeing my grand daughter this weekend, I’m trying to rest up as much as I can. So instead of a regular post, I’m sharing my October Newsletter below.

October Newsletter

I’ve been wondering about fall leaves. How can something that appears to be dying be so beautiful? Maybe because they are beautiful, and it’s not so much about dying as it is letting go to make room for something better.

This article explains how shorter days and cooler nights signal leaf-dropping trees to line up “abscission” (scissor) cells in just the right place to release their leaves. This letting go saves the trees energy and protects them from freezing.

In Trust the Timing, A Memoir of Finding Love Again, I learned to let go of burdensome relationships and resentments to make room for love. Letting go is rarely an easy process for me. Like I wrote in chapter 21, a friend once told me that “everything she ever let go of had claw marks on it.” I thought she was joking. Now, I understand.

The benefits of letting go do pay off in time.

When we let go of burdens, we make room for blessings.

 We let go of resentment to make room for love.
We let go of worry to make room for hope.
We let go of doubt to make room for joy.

Lately, I’ve been practicing letting go with my adult children’s lives and my parents’ possessions. The tasks are not easy. Okay, they are downright hard, and sometimes, I’m not that good at it. The logistical challenges make up the tip of the iceberg while the emotional challenges weigh heavy beneath the surface. But I’m doing the work because my grown children need to make their own decisions, and my parents don’t need material possessions in heaven. It helps to remember this message:

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”  Matthew 11:28 – 30

My children will learn as I did, (or rather do, since I’m learning all the time) and some day, someone else will be living in my parent’s house, just like new blossoms and leaves will grow on the trees when spring returns. In the meantime, deer have found comfort in the stillness of my parents’ backyard and make their beds in the fallen leaves.

Give with Balance

SOCS

“Give until it hurts,” is not my idea of healthy.  Giving is good, but not to the point of exhaustion, unless you get to rest a lot and recharge your batteries before you have to give again. I think I got burned out on giving during various times of my life. I would sometimes give in too often.

Never give up on your dreams, but if you want to change your dreams, that’s okay. It’s okay to give up something that isn’t good for you. I should speak for myself. I have given up on people who were not good for me. I’ve also hung in there with challenging people. There are people, like my children, who I will never give up on. There are people who I will also love from a distance. And pray for from a distance. Letting Go sounds better than giving up. Letting Go is good as long as you’re not dropping something you don’t want to break.

I heard someone say that everything she ever let go of had claw marks on it. I can relate to that. I don’t want to let go of some clothes that I think I could fit into again if I lost ten pounds. But I want more room in my closet. So, I remind myself that if I give these things away, someone else can wear and enjoy them now.

I will continue to give of my time and my love, but not to the point where I am hurting myself. I will not give up on my country, even though I cannot watch the news much. And the thing I most want to encourage, comes from a song from The Lion King:

“You should never take more than you give.”
