In 2015 after Freddie Gray died from injuries sustained while in police custody, Baltimore protests were destructive and police reacted with “tear gas, rubber bullets, and widespread arrests.” The good news is that activists who experienced those events five years ago, are helping this year’s young demonstrators avoid violence. Brothers Invent Solar-Powered Hand Washing Basin for their Community
Five year old Simone attended a march with her family in Houston, Texas on June 2. When she became frightened and started crying, a police officer comforted her. She asked the officer, “Are you going to shoot us?” The unidentified officer told her kindly that they were there to protect her. Her father, Simeon Bartee, who has personally experienced police brutality said, “I just want to tell the officer thank you for giving me a different perspective on what police officers, the good police officers, are like.”
Five-year-old Simone also gained a new perspective. The officer told her father that he has a daughter and wanted to make it home safe for her, too.
“She looked up at me and said, ‘I didn’t know police officers had kids,'” Bartee added.

New PBS Kids Series shows Superheroes Overcoming Challenges
The team of “Hero Elementary” includes a kid who can fly but is afraid of heights, a girl who can teleport, a boy who creates bubble forcefields, and a boy named AJ Gadgets who is on the autism spectrum. They solve problems and everyone belongs. You can read more about “Hero Elementary” here.
