You’re Never Too Old

Today’s Stream of Consciousness prompt is, “your/you’re/yore.” Linda Hill, our promptress, directed us to use one, or use them all and to enjoy! I don’t know how many I’ll use. The first thing that popped into my head was a quote by C.S.Lewis that starts out, “You’re never too old….” But I didn’t remember it all, so I looked it up. That’s what the stream of consciousness told me to do, so here it is:

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” C.S. Lewis

C.S. Lewis, who wrote about the days of yore, or the days of Narnia, that feel like the days of yore. “You are…” is what he wrote. So, I remembered the gist of the message, and it gives me hope. Like Narnia. You’re never too old to imagine Narnia, to imagine talking lions and courageous little animals.

You’re never too old to take a piece of your dream from the days of yore and bring it to life, even if you thought it was dead.

You’re never too old to dance! I love the videos of 90 something year old ladies dancing!

I better start practicing!

You’re never too old to sing a new song, or start a new adventure, even if that adventure is tasting a new food you never tried before. It was just a few years ago that I tried pomegranate seeds for the first time. Now I can’t wait for them to come back in season.

You’re never too old to meditate, or smile in your heart, or be silly. I look forward to being silly as I get old. I’ve spent much of my adult life being serious, with the silly moments few and far between. Being silly is something really old people can get away with. Of course, what is really old gets older all the time. I guess you would be really old if you lived back in the days of yore. Back before they had computers. Hey, that would be me. I better start dancing!

The Girl on the Right

“It’s never too late to have a happy childhood.”

Regardless of the past, it is possible to embrace our free spirits, to have faith and trust our playfulness, to have more and more moments of joy!

For most of my life, I’ve felt like the girl in the middle – watching, worrying, and wondering if I can do that, and if I can do it the right way. If I had ever taken ballet, I would definitely have been her, because learning choreographed dance moves has always been hard for me. It took me years and extra practice to even learn the simple Electric Slide. Once I learn it, I have it down pretty good, though.

Let me go practice that slide, to make sure……. Well, I might need a refresher.

Occasionally, I’ve been like the girl in between the middle girl (the old me) and the girl on the right, the one who is doing it correctly. I love the approval I get when I’m a “good girl.”

But I’ve rarely been the girl on the right. Oh, I’ve thought about it, imagined doing things…

Waiting, Singing, Not so much Thinking.

Waiting. That’s what I seem to be doing lately. At least in my head. I’m busy as ever. But my mind is focused on something that might happen in the future. Now that I think about it, there is more than one big thing I’m waiting for. Exciting things, energizing things, things that could make very big changes in my life. (I should have written: life changing things.) Oh, stream of consciousness. So tempting to edit. I’ve been a rule follower all of my life. I’m tired of it sometimes. But I still follow the rules, mostly, but not always. That scares me to write that. I’m going to get caught. Stop it!

Back to… what was it…..? Waiting. For things I can’t reveal right now. Things that may not happen for a few months, or several months even, but within a year.

So, what to do when I’m thinking too much in the future. I do think too much sometimes. When the thoughts are not helpful, like… am I getting a cold or is this just allergies? or other worse thoughts that I’m not going to write, because they are not happening and why give them any more thought? What I do sometimes that works really well, is SING!

I love to sing. I’ve loved singing since I was about 11 years old and listened to the sound track of the Sound of Music over and over and over again. That’s how I learned to sing.

But I rarely sang in front of people, outside my inner circle, my ring of comfort, for singing, was small, until I was in my 40s – when I started going to a church that had contemporary praise music, and they invited me to sing with them after I went to a rehearsal and they knew I could sing. I eventually learned more guitar chords and sang and played guitar on the little stage. It was not a huge congregation, but anyway, it got me more comfortable singing in front of people. Now, I still get nervous in front of a new group, and I have to work harder to keep my voice in shape since I’m almost 60 (!) another thing that will happen in just a few months, wait, it’s in just over two months! My, how time flies.

My point is, that it’s never too late to become what you might have been. I don’t like to watch those shows on TV where amateurs compete with their talent, because it makes me feel like I could have been a professional singer. But I needed to learn some things first. Plus I want to be an artist and a writer. Correction. I am an artist and a writer!

So, while I wait for those things that I anticipate with excitement, I can sing to keep myself in the present moment. I find singing to be soothing. Singing to myself, with the radio, or a video, especially.  When I’m worried about my health, which is really pretty good, all things considered, I sing these words to the tune of “I’m so Pretty,” from West Side Story. Oh, I just discovered it’s “I feel Pretty.” ! I’ve been singing it wrong….no, I’m not, because I’m making it up.  Here are the words I sing:

I’m so healthy, Oh so healthy

I’m so healthy and happy and free

I’m so healthy

Cause I’m finally learning to be me……

 

I’m so healthy, Oh so healthy

I’m so health and wealthy and wise

I’m so healthy,

Cause I’m seeing through clearer eyes.

Temper, Trek, and the Stream of Consciousness

They say red heads have bad tempers. My hair is not as red as it used to be, but I’ve never had a bad temper. I don’t even remember any other red heads having bad tempers. Not that there are a lot of us around. I have a reputation, mostly on the job, of being a calm person. Yet, I don’t always feel calm inside my head. I have a considerable amount of anxiety. That’s probably why I like to teach meditation to my  clients, because I need reminders. I don’t like feeling anxious or angry. The times I’ve felt angry enough to lose my temper feel alien to me. Alien like going into a temporal anomaly. Where did that come from? Oh, my stream of consciousness.

Sometimes I’ve been tempted to let myself get really angry and blow up. It seems like fun for other people, or else why would they do it? I believe anger can be addicting. But I don’t like it. Not one bit. Except the cussing alone in my car, but that was last week’s SOC post….

Where was I?

Losing my temper, as tempted as I might be to try it, almost always feels wrong to me. I can feel anger, but I don’t like to yell a lot. I get shaky and feel slightly sick in my stomach, when I come close to losing my temper. Maybe it has something to do with Spock. That’s right. I’m going to sci-fi again. I think I need a Star Trek fix. It’s been so long. Spock, my first crush back when the original Trek first aired, almost never got angry. He kept his emotions under control with meditation and logic. I admired that in him because my life at age 11 was chaotic. That’s another story that must be somewhere on this blog.

So, what does this have to do with Anything Is Possible?

It’s possible to control our emotions, and not let our emotions control us.

It’s possible for me to feel and express anger without losing my temper. (My daughter would tell you that I have lost my temper plenty of times, but it’s really only a couple of times that I’ve really lost it.)

Hooray for Play!

Linda’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday post prompt for today was “-ay.” She encouraged us to  play with a word ending in “-ay.”

Say what you want. Not what you don’t want. That’s a theme for me this weekend, since Thursday, when I started working on a blog post for next week about some one encouraging that. But back to today!

If I say I don’t want this or that, or whine that I don’t have enough TIME, to do this or that. I’m creating negative energy. What I need to say is, I want more time! More time to play! More time to play with art, and color, more time to play with words! Like this! I’m playing right now, with words! I love it!

Monday I took a vacation day to play. I’d taken off Thursday to work on the house, and Friday, as usual to write. I wrote the word “play!” on my calendar for Monday. So my husband and I took the tandem kayak out to play. It had been months since we’d gone kayaking. Maybe even a year, who knows. So many things get in the way of play.

So we paddled across the basin to a small island. I had been worried, cause I have a habit of worrying, that I would be so out of shape, I wouldn’t be able to make it to the island, or really that my husband would have to do a lot more paddling than me. I did stop paddling about halfway across the basin, and he stopped too. We just sat there, looking at the water sparkling with sun drops. It was quiet. I realized that the more open the water is, the fewer landmarks, or objects there are to help you see that you are making progress. The little strip of beach on the island finally started to get closer. I guess it might have taken about 15 or 20 minutes to paddle to the island. I really have no idea, but it seemed like a long time. But we made it! Yay!

There was another couple there, each with their own kayak, and we chatted a bit, but mostly we just enjoyed the peace and quiet of the island. There are no man made structures there, just a little trash left by campers. We’ll have to bring a trash bag next time to collect some. My husband did find an old fire extinguisher and brought it home to recycle. The trash was hidden behind some bushes, so it was easy to look at the pristine parts of the island: the little crabs and minnows in the shallows, the white egrets and the brown pelicans. It was so quiet! Most of the time, all we heard were bird sounds and gently lapping water and the breeze in the marsh grass.

After relaxing on the island for about 30 minutes, and talking with a man who came in on a paddle board, we shoved off. This time, we paddled closer to the edge of the basin, near the marsh grass. We stopped a couple of times just to rest and listen to the quiet, and watch the egrets hunting and the pelicans diving for fish. We saw fish jump out of the water, and my husband said he wants to bring a fishing pole next time.

We worked hard paddling to and from the island. At least I worked hard. My husband said it was a good work out. And yet, this work was play. I needed it. I need more play!

Loving Me, Too

It was one of those days. I felt overwhelmed to the point of tears, but had not cried in a months. Tears can be a good way to release tension, though that was not my plan. “I’m supposed to be strong,” according to the tape in my head that has played so long, I tend to believe it. Plus, I had so much to be thankful for! When I got home from work, I didn’t know whether to vent or to take a nap.

Then my dear husband asked how my day was, and the floodgates opened, releasing my tears as he held me.

There were years when no one held me when I cried. No one except God, that is. I imagined God holding me, and God did hold me, lovingly, for which I am eternally grateful.

Remembering I am forever loved by God always helps. 

But feeling physical…
