SoCS: Senior Moments, Mini Skirts, and Yoga Pants

Well, it’s official.

I’m a senior citizen. Today is my 65th birthday. (As you’re reading this on Saturday, because I’m writing it on the eve of my 65th birthday.)

What is the minimum age at which a person can claim forgetfulness and confusion is due to a “senior moment?” I know some folks could say it’s in your fifties. I have been getting a senior discount at the movies for maybe ten years. Oh, I miss going the movie theatre. Maybe some day that will happen again. I’ve been having senior moments more often, though not every day and with no serious consequences. If a person has a touch of ADD or head in the clouds since childhood…. but those aren’t senior moments are they? Now, I can call them senior moments. Now, I have Medicare. Hope I don’t have to use it much, but it will probably be better than what I had.

Going back to the prompt remember mini skirts? My dad hated them. I think they started in the 60s. Late 60s maybe. Not very comfortable. I used to wear shorts under my skirt in junior high school. And how could I think that was okay to have the original classic Star Trek female crew wearing those impossibly short dresses? Now, it makes me cringe. In the pilot episode the psychiatrist wore pants. Good for her. But later, it was ridiculous, but I had no idea it was ridiculous, since I wore mini skirts. I’m not even going to look for a video.

Maxi skirts are much better. I have maxi skirts now – made from stretchy material like my yoga pants which I love to wear almost all the time now. Because I CAN. Yoga pants, sweat shirts. Yeah, I might get dressed up again some day, maybe even for my birthday dinner. But only if I want to. The plan is to go hiking in the afternoon. Doesn’t matter how far, as long as I get out into the woods and walk around on my 65th birthday.

A couple of days ago, I found a sketch I drew probably in the 70s. Mini skirts were still around, because I remember wearing one during my senior year in high school. Anyway, here’s the sketch. No idea how I came up with it. Probably had something to do with my head being in the clouds, naturally, not even on drugs necessarily, but lets not go there.

There’s a story here, right? Feel free to add a caption or title for this sketch.

Today’s SoCS prompt was: “mini/maxi.” Use “mini” (the smallest of something) or “maxi” (the largest) or both in your post. Have fun!

  1. Happy 65th Birthday. You are now officially permitted to have senior moments.

  2. Maybe smoking a little weed? Happy birthday, you’re only a few ahead of me and I’m cool with turning 65! Hell I think 70 is the new 50 so we’re in good shape. Have a nice hike. Staying at the mountains for the weekend?

  3. A belated Happy Birthday, JoAnna. We can’t change the age of our body, but we can change the age of our thinking.

  4. Happy Birthday, JoAnna! Not to worry about the senior moments, try to wear them as a badge of honor. I was saying to my roommate yesterday (she and I are a year apart in age) that we need a large white board hanging in the living room so we can write down and remember names, dates and whatever else is important to us, like why we just walked into the kitchen. 😉

I’m with you on the comfy clothes. Since I retired, that’s all I wear – pants and tops that do not require ironing or strain the pudge around my middle. It’s time to relax! Have a wonderful day hiking (in your yoga pants?) and enjoying the outdoors.

    • Thank you so much, Mary! I might not wear the yoga pants hiking because they don’t have pockets. I like your white board idea. It’s much better than sticky notes. Maybe some day I’ll have a white board on the frig. They should make refrigerators like that. I hope you enjoy your day!

  5. Happy birthday, JoAnna! ❤ My mother-in-law, now in her nineties, wore a miniskirt at her retirement party in 1988! I personally live in Bermuda shorts and orthopedic flip flops most of the time.

Love the sketch. "Captive of My Fantasies" ? Maybe not… 🙂 Enjoy your special day!

    • That’s a great image of your mother in law at her retirement party. Captive of My Fantasies sounds intriguing! I love orthopedic flip flops and wear crocs sandals as much as I can.

  6. Happy Birthday!! I hope your day is a great one!

  7. Happy Birthday! As to when senior moments start? My best friend is a millennial and is 32-33 and he’s been having “senior” moments for a couple of years. 🙂

  8. Happy birthday! Be sure to pick a good Medicare Advantage plan.

    • Thanks, John. I wasn’t sure about the advantage at first, but that’s what I’m going with, from Humana. Nice to have confirmation.

      • I don’t think the literature makes it very clear what the advantages of an advantage plan are. I considered a Part C plan, but realized you get more benefits with the advantage plan, and I now have one that doesn’t cost me more than the Part B premium. And that includes prescription drugs.

  9. Happy Birthday, JoAnna and welcome to the elite Medicare club! Make sure you buy Part D or you will be penalized later on. Now, about those skirts, I wrote about that today, too. Great senior minds! Love the sketch. Not sure about a caption- I think it deserves a short story.

  10. Happy Birthday, JoAnna! Take advantage of the perks 🙂
    I can’t imagine how I used to ride a bicycle in a mini-skirt!
A fascinating sketch. My suggestion for the title is “The Annunciation of Mary.”

    • Thanks, Rosaliene! I seem to remember riding a bicycle in a mini skirt, too. Not often though. “The Annunciation of Mary” is an intriguing title. I’m guessing the winged unicorn is an angel?

  11. Happy birthday!! May this be the best year yet!
Your sketch is wonderful. My caption is Pegasus and Tinkerbell Save the World!

  12. Happy Birthday, JoAnna. Caption for the excellent drawing:” If I nudge the lid off you can escape”

  13. Happy belated! I turned 49 2 weeks ago. My senior moments started at 40, so you’re all set!

    • Thanks, Jami. It’s good to know senior moments are fairly common. I hope to develop a sense of humor about them. Happy belated birthday to you! May the new year bring even more blessings!
