Dr. Martin Luther King on Peace & an Old Song

Organize for Peace MLK

On Monday in the US, we honor the life and teachings of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This quote about peace is one of many gems he gave us. You can find more MLK quotes here.

I strongly believe that we in the US need a well-funded Department of Peace to focus on building communication and understand and to seek compromise rather than violence.

Anybody here remember this song?

  1. I concur. He was a wise man with a loving heart.

  2. Thank you Jo-Anna for bringing us this important post. Ever now and again a leader is born who possesses both a strong and loving heart as well as intelligence. Martin Luther King. certainly is one of them. Same goes for Kennedy and Lincoln.
May each part of the world again be given Leaders with these qualities.
    Bless

  3. Love the idea of a Department of Peace.

    • I just decided to look up the idea and was surprised that it goes all the way back to “A plan of a Peace-Office for the United States” proposed in 1793. Others have brought it up, most recently encouraged by Marrianne Williamson. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Department_of_Peace It’s overdue.

      • Thanks for sharing the link, JoAnna. The historical record indicates that the case for continued warfare has trumped our calls for a peaceful world.

        • That’s sadly true, so far. I’m going to keep calling for peace anyway. At the very least, we can seek peace in our individual lives. I know that’s hard with all that’s going on. That thought reminds me of your book which I recently finished. I’m working on pulling my thoughts together in a post. So far it’s mostly about Richard and how I first thought we didn’t have much in common, but later found we do have a few things that are important. Anyway, I wish you peaceful moments.

  4. I do not remember the song . I am a fan of Dr King, whose voice gives me goosebumps. His impact, while profound, could have been so much more.
